3 of 4 people found the following review helpful: Fair and Balanced 3/16/2008 This book is an eye opener into the insidious assault on our ability as Americans to think in a fair and balanced way. This war against sound thinking and decision making is being waged against us by powerful, vested interests: banking, oil, and large news media corporations, e.g. Fox News. Such interests groups work deliberately to "manufacture consent" for their own agendas from the public. On one hand terror is used to resign our rights to privacy, foreverbefore inherent, to be forevermore no more. On the other, its infiltrated and monopolized media assures us that things are "fair and balanced" alluding to the citizenry that the changes they are promoting are being well considered and thought out. This illusions American into concluding that it is OK to lose long held rights and freedoms, despite a glaringly paper thin and narrowing margin of environmental stability and both legal and social justice. I wish I could give this 10 stars. 3/14/2008 There is no arguing with the information put forth in this book. Everyone should read it, then draw their own conclusions. I have a new respect for Al Gore, he simply is not in the same league intellectually with most politicians today. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
2 of 3 people found the following review helpful: A wake up call to America! 3/10/2008 In "Assault on Reason" Mr. Gore not only explains the numerous dubious and often illegal transgressions of the current administration, but he also explains the advanced research into the human mind that explains how a nation can be so thouroughly snowballed. He outlines what the current problems are and how we got here, but he also goes one step beyond to offer viable concrete solutions to these issues. The only sad thing about reading this book is when you realize how very different this world would be had this brilliant man been allowed to take the office he was elected to 8 years ago. Thank You. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful: Great book, shameful translation 3/4/2008 This is one of the most illuminating books I've read in a long time. I'm almost grateful Gore didn't make it to the presidency in 2000 because he got to use his time in better endeavors. He's really one of the great minds of our time and I'm sure his influence will get to change our society for better. Gore's informed points of view about the Bush administration are frightening to say the least. One can only wish we'd be able to fix all the things that got wrong in this past 8 years but, as Gore very well points out, it's not only the politicians responsability, but of all of us. Without active participation and information there's little that can be done. Of course his criticism to Bush and Co. and to US society in general lacks a constructive criticism to the Democratic Party. I'd wish to hear what he has to say about his own party, but I guess we'll have to wait another ten or so years before that happens. I bought this book in Spanish because I enjoy reading in my native language, and to support publications in Spanish at the same time. Wrong! The translation is not only a disgrace, it is an embarrassment to all of us who speak the language. I'm assuming that they wanted to have the Spanish version available shortly after they released the original version in English (October 06 for English, Nov 06 for Spanish), which is a great strategy. The problem is that the result is incredibly bad. If you want to read this book, don't bother buying it in Spanish, go for the English version directly! Thank You. Was this review helpful?
